Armed Theft of Mountain Bikes Places Riders Over the Edge within the Bay Space’s Eastside

For the previous month, masked and armed males have been stealing high-value mountain bikes at gunpoint within the hills east of Oakland, Calif. There have been at the least 5 such incidents in latest weeks, though it’s not unparalleled for armed bike robberies. To happen within the discipline within the final years. The police haven’t but made any arrests within the latest theft incidents.

Most encounters have taken place in or close to Joaquin Miller Park, a very talked-about spot for the East Bay mountain bike scene. Plenty of good trails, proximity to the thriving cities of Redwood Grove, Berkeley and Oakland are a draw. However thieves discover so many on bikes which are $5,000 and up are simple to steal.

Many instances of theft are related. A automobile comes with a rider, a person with a masks on his face, walks out, factors a gun on the bicycle owner, and shortly takes away their bike in a stampede. Generally, bikes are taken from racks of automobiles in trailhead parking tons and when the driving force walks out to protest, they’ve a gun of their face.

One other brazen assault occurred in Berkeley in April, when thieves carjacked a van carrying members of the highschool mountain bike crew together with 4 bikes and the crew’s van. The thieves adopted the van down a busy freeway and when it parked in entrance of one of many kid’s properties, the carjackers shortly exited the automobile behind them, brandishing weapons, and taking the van and bike, College students and their coaches left outdoors, terrified

It is an awesome experience in these hills.

[ed note: I have had two mountain bikes stolen from the rear rack of my vehicles in recent years, both in Marin County, across the Richmond/San Rafael Bride from Oakland/Berkeley. In both cases, my car was parked near freeways providing easy exit points for thieves. Police said my car was likely followed from the freeway to where I parked, both times. In my defense, the bike were locked to the rack both times too, though with cable locks, which I’ll never use again. In the years since, I’ve learned thieves target affluent areas with easy access by car. Unsurprising, perhaps, but a lesson you typically have to deal with personally before it begins to click.]

Staff coach Nick Hopper-Tomich stated: “It is heartbreaking to assume that they is likely to be discouraged from doing this.” “He likes to experience and I do not need something to get in his manner.”

The police haven’t got a lot to go on right here, with males who’ve dedicated crimes sporting ski masks and utilizing completely different automobiles. However as all the time, for those who’re shopping for an older bike, put your antenna up and if there appears to be one thing flawed with the bike’s origins, stroll away.

Since my bike was stolen, I’ve had glorious luck with the ABUS Granite X-Plus 54 Mini U-Lock mixed with the Kryptonite Keeper chain. I by no means depart a motorbike on my rack with out using each of those.
